History

WHRO was launched on Sep 27, 1961 as the first educational tv in Virginia. Ch 15 was previously assigned to WVEC, an NBC affiliate at that time. Before it switched to Channel 13 as an ABC affiliate. WHRO was a member of NET and came under the ownership of Norfolk and Hampton School Systems. It relocated to its current studios I Norfolk in 1963; the studios were refurbished in 1990. Eight other schools joined the educational station in 1966 and formed HRETA with it in 1968. In 1970 it became a charter PBS affiliate.
