Why governor races matter
Governors sign or veto state laws, propose state budgets, oversee state agencies and, in many states, play a role in how elections are run and how vacancies are filled. In most states the governor appoints a temporary replacement when a U.S. Senate seat becomes vacant, as happened in Florida and Ohio during the current Congress.
