History

KFDM kicked off on April 24, 1955 as the oldest television in Beaumont-Port Arthur markets. A UHF channel 31 existed before the launch of the station but closed down less than a year after signing on. The calls were borrowed from its sister KFDM 560 AM established in 1924 by Magnolia Petroleum Company. It used TV suffix to separate it from the radio sibling from 1955 to 1964 when AM 560 was released and changed its calls to KLVI. The TV suffix was again added in 1980 and remained in used until 2009. A.H. Belo Corporation became the new owner of the television in 1969 before merging with Corinthian Broadcasting in 1983. It remained an affiliate of UPN from 2003 to 2006 before signing The CW on its second sub-channel.

The analog signal of the station was dropped in favor of digital on June 12, 2009 following a transition mandated by Federal Communications Commission. Freedom Communications along others announced the sale of KFDM to Sinclair Broadcast Group in a move to exit from television broadcasting on Nov 2, 2011. In process, the channel became the 4th Sinclair-owned asset in the Texas and first in Eastern part of the state as the company already had ownership over KEYE, KABB and KMYS. It started operating the channel under a brokerage agreement from Dec 1, 2011; the deal consummated on April 2, 2012. Following the sale of KBTV to Deerfield Media by Nexstar, Sinclair started to manage the operations of the station as the deal consummated on Dec 3, 2012.

Programming

Syndicated programs produced by the channel include The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy!, Dr. Phil and others. It in April 2011 became the second channel in the Southeastern portion of Texas to broadcast local news-bulletins in HD.
