KREM-TV owned by Tegna Inc. is a Spokane, Washington based service operating in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. It shares duopoly with CW affiliate KSN. The studios of the two stations are located on South Street in Spokane and transmitter is located on Krell Hill southeast of Spokane. The cable and satellite service available in HD on Comcast Xfinity are also available on Cable Systems in Edmonton, Calgary and Alberta. The channel in Edmonton and Calgary in result air American shows on Pacific Time. It is one of the five channels in Canada available on Shaw Direct satellite. Cable systems also carry KREM in eastern British Columbia. Palouse and Coeur d’Alene viewers get the service via Charter Spectrum. KLEW owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group competes with the channel as CBS affiliate and serves the southern portion of the market; both are carried by DirecTv and Dish Network across Spokane market.

History

KREM went on air on Oct 31, 1954; the channel was at the beginning a dual DuMont and ABC affiliate however, after the closure of DuMont, it became a sole ABC affiliate. It was briefly affiliated with NTA Film Network in late 50s. It switched affiliation with KXLY to become a CBS affiliate on Aug 8, 1976. CBS wanted to approach KHQ while KREM titled towards NBC however in the end KREM hooked with CBS. Cole Wylie was the original owner of KREM-TV and also owned KREM 970 AM, the radio sister. King Broadcasting Company in 1957 acquired the Wyile assets and released the radios in 1984. King was acquired by Providence Journal Company in 1992 while Providence merged with Belo Corporation in 1997. Gannett Company in Dec 2013 purchased Belo and on June 29, 205 spit its broadcasting and publishing operations. KSKN and KREM were shifted under the umbrella of Tegna Inc. later.

 

Programming

KREM at present broadcast 28.5 hours of news-bulletins and starts with a 2-hour morning newscast followed by a noon news-bulletin and then 4, 5, 6 and 11pm evening newscasts.
