History

WFRV went on air on Dec 10, 1953 as WNAM-TV from Neenah, An ABC affiliate the station was originally owned by Neenah-Menasha Broadcasting Company. It had a radio sister with the same calls. The vice-president of the station on Dec 31, 1954 announced that it would be temporarily ceasing the broadcast operations on Jan 2, 1955 following a merger with Valley Telecasting Company. Valley at that time had acquired a construction permit to build WFRV on Ch 5 in Green Bay however, the permit acquired since March 1954 had not been used to construct the station. It then got the FM studios of WJPG on lease in De Pere and initiated microwave relays between WNAM and WFRV. On May 20, 1955, WFRV signed on air with a 100,000 w transmitter. The firs live broadcast of the ABC and DuMont affiliate aired on June 1, 1955.

The affiliation was switched to NBC in 1959. It was the maiden service in Northeastern Wisconsin to offer color broadcasts in 1958 and was also the first to cover lunar eclipse in 1959.  Channel 5 was also Green Bay’s first local news broadcaster; the local new operations started in 1965. Norton Group in mid-60s purchased the station and moved it from the Green Bay to Fox Valley. WFRV expanded its reach to Upper Peninsula of Michigan with launch of WJMN in Escanaba on Oct 7, 1969. It for the second time signed affiliation with ABC in April 1983, WLUK replaced it as NBC affiliate on Ch 11. In 80s the service was purchased to Midwest Radio and Television. The company owned by Murphys and McNallys was acquired by CBS in 1992. On March 15, 1992, WFRV became a CBS O&O service; the ABC affiliation was taken by WBAY.

Liberty Media in 2007 purchased WFRV and WJMN and sold it to Nexstar Broadcasting Group on July 1, 2011.  Channel 5 was rebranded as Local 5 on Jan 23, 2012.
