WBKO established on June 3, 1962 is a joint Fox, ABC and CW+ affiliate licensed to Bowling Green, Kentucky operating in south central Kentucky. Gray Television is the owner of the channel with studios located on Russellville Road along the William H. Natcher Parkway in Bowling Green. History as WLTV
The channel hit the waves on June 3, 1962 as WLTV and was the first commercial outlet to air on VHF analog ch 13. Joe Walters has the ownership over the channel through Argus Broadcasting. It was an independent channel having studios with a transmitter in rural Warren County. Most TV markets in US worked with at least two VHF channels but Bowling Green was only assigned one VHF channel. It was due to the fact that the market was sandwiched between Evansville and Louisville; Nashville and Jackson; Cape Girardeau and Paducah and Lexington and Knoxville. While Bowling Green depended on Nashville affiliates, the channel was the only commercial television service in the market until WQQB hit the waves in Dec 1989.
WLTV signed ABC affiliation on Mach 6, 1967 and after that moved to the news studio facilities located on Morgantown Road in downtown Bowling Green. Argus released the channel to Professional Telecasting Systems on June 11, 1970. This moved the transmitter to its current site which it shares with Public Broadcasting Service member WKYU-TV.
WBKO
It assumed WBKO calls and introduced color broadcasting in studio and news-bulletin in 1971. The studios were relocated to studios on East 10th Street in downtown Bowling Green. A local group known as Bluegrass Media purchased WBKO from Professional Telecasting in 1976.
