Key Points

  • OpenAI said the GPT-6 rollout expands to free and Go ChatGPT users starting Thursday, Oct. 8, after paid plans began getting it Wednesday.
  • Free and Go users are slated to get GPT-6 Luna. Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise get GPT-6 Sol.
  • Intelligent UI can mix text with charts, buttons, forms and small tools inside a chat reply. A plain text answer is still possible.
  • OpenAI says GPT-6 Instant starts web-search answers 44 percent sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant, based on its own tests.
  • The update covers ChatGPT’s Chat tab only. OpenAI says the models behind Work and Codex are not changing in this release.

Free ChatGPT users are in line for GPT-6 starting Thursday. OpenAI said on Wednesday that GPT-6 and a new answer format it calls Intelligent UI began rolling out that day to paid plans, and that the rollout expands to the free and Go tiers the next day.

What happened

In a post published Oct. 7, OpenAI said it is bringing a GPT-6 model built for everyday chat to the more than 1.2 billion people who use ChatGPT each week. The first GPT-6 models launched for paid customers last month. LiveNewsWorld covered that September debut of GPT-6 Sol and Luna alongside Claude Opus 5.5.

This week’s change is about who gets the models inside ChatGPT’s Chat tab, and how answers can look. OpenAI says GPT-6 in Chat is powered by GPT-6 Sol for Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise, and by GPT-6 Luna for Free and Go. Both are tuned for everyday conversation. Enterprise access depends on workplace admin settings.

The Verge, citing the same announcement, reported Wednesday evening that the free and Go expansion was set for Thursday, while higher-tier plans get Sol and the free and Go plans get Luna.

Latest development

As of Thursday afternoon ET, OpenAI’s Oct. 7 post was still the company’s public description of the free-tier timing: the expansion “starts” Thursday, and the company has described it as a rollout, not a switch that reaches every account at once. Notebookcheck reported Thursday that OpenAI’s help center still names GPT-5.6 Luna as the Free and Go default and says GPT-6 may not appear in the model menu for every account yet. Not every free account is confirmed to have GPT-6 Luna yet.

Intelligent UI is the other half of the release. OpenAI says it trained GPT-6 to compose replies from text, visuals and interactive elements, and to use plain text when that is the better answer. Replies can include graphics, tappable buttons, forms, charts and tools the user can operate in the conversation. OpenAI’s examples include a diagram of a seven-speed bicycle, a savings calculator, a bill splitter and a game. The Verge also described an OpenAI example that walks through Mahjong tiles.

OpenAI says ChatGPT can now start answering while it is still thinking, instead of waiting until a reasoning step is finished. In an internal evaluation, the company says GPT-6 Extra High can begin answering in the same amount of time as GPT-5.6 Medium while scoring better than GPT-5.6 Extra High. For questions that need web search, OpenAI says GPT-6 Instant starts answering 44 percent sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant. Those figures are OpenAI’s own tests, not an independent benchmark.

Why it matters

The free and Go tiers are ChatGPT’s largest audience. A staged Thursday rollout means some U.S. users will see Luna and Intelligent UI before others, and older desktop apps may not show the new interface. Notebookcheck, citing OpenAI’s help center, said the older Windows and Mac desktop apps do not support Intelligent UI and that OpenAI points those users to the web version. Phone users need a current app build. Intelligent UI has no separate quota, but the usual plan limits still apply, Notebookcheck reported.

OpenAI also says GPT-6 is meant to resist attempts to bypass its safety training, including multi-turn attacks, and that safety training was updated against high-risk misuse involving cyberattacks, biological threats and violence. The company says the model should refuse less often on harmless requests and be clearer about what it cannot do. Detail is in OpenAI’s system card. A separate LiveNewsWorld report looks at the reported plan by Google, OpenAI and Anthropic for a frontier-AI standards body.

What happens next

OpenAI says this release does not change the models that power ChatGPT Work or Codex. Users who do not see GPT-6 in the model picker should not assume the rollout has failed. OpenAI has not given a region-by-region clock for when every free account will have Luna.
