KJZZ-TV owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group and launched on April 14, 1989 is a Salt Lake City, Utah channel located on South Main Street in downtown Slat Lake City with a transmitter installed on Farnsworth Peak in the Oquirrh Mountains. KUTV and KMYU are the sisters of the channel. It shares triopoly with KMYU and KUTV linked with MyNetworkTV and CBS respectively. A chain of 80 broadcast translators throw the channel across Utah and its boundaries in Nevada, Idaho and Colorado.

History

The station through an ID: 790822KE attained a construction permit on Dec 6, 1984 for a Ch 14 on UHF to broadcast in Salt Lake City and the surrounding areas. It remained without calls for two years and eventually settled on KGBS in Nov 1986 before changing it to KXIV in Feb 1988. After replacing the construction permits for time it finally received licensing on March 24, 1989 and signed on air on April 14, 1989. It would initially host dramas, cartoons, sitcoms, movies, religious programming and general interest programs. KXIV was launched by American Stores.

The calls were changed to KJZZ under the ownership of Larry H. Miller (the Utah Jazz owner) who acquired the interest in the service in Feb 1993. Talk and reality shows programming was added to the content in the latter part of 90s.

KJZZ inked an agreement with UPN on Jan 16, 1995 and became its charter affiliate. It would broadcast Urban and ethnic programming. Leaving the United Paramount Network in 2001, it turned independent. The channel got linked with MyNetworkTV on Sep 5, 2006. It once again became an independent service by dropping the network on Aug 18, 2008. KJZZ was acquired by Sinclair Broadcast Group in the summers of 2017. The Salt Lake City news station completed its digital conversion on June 12, 2009. It switched to 720p in 2016, added comet on its digital sub-channel 14.2 in Feb 2017 and moved its digital signal to ch 19 in Sep 2018.
