KPEJ commenced its operations on June 16, 1986 as an independent service although it would carry select Fox programming at primetime. KPEJ formally became a primary Fox affiliate in 1990 but began carrying UPN as its secondary affiliate in 1998. However, UPN was taken over by KOSA in 2003.
