KTRE debuted on Aug 31, 1955 and was launched by the owners and founders of KTRE-AM (now defunct). Channel 9 was originally served as a broadcast relay station of KPRC affiliated with Houston-based NBC affiliate KPRC. It however, would occasionally show divergence form the CBS and ABC’s regularly scheduled programming. Lufkin and Nacogdoches were collapsed into one market: Tyler-Longview by FCC in 1964 and not long after this change the channel was acquired by Buford family which owned KLTV. Until 1984, KTRE held a joint primary affiliation sharing agreement with the Big three including CBS, ABC and NBC with a slight tilt towards ABC.

CBS affiliation was dropped when KFXK signed on air in Sep 1984 and lost NBC to KETK in March 1987. In 1989, both KTRE and KLTV were acquired by Civic Communications. The company merged with Liberty Corporation in 2002 which in turn joined the umbrella of Raycom Media in 2006. Gray Television on June 25, 2018 announced its merger with Raycom. This resulted in the sale of KTRE and KLTV to Gray; the sale was approved on Dec 20, 2018 and consummated on Jan 2, 2019. KTRE completed its digital transition on June 12, 2009.

Syndicated programs offered by the channel include The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Live with Kelly and Ryan, Texas Country Reporter, Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. It presently broadcasts 5 hours of locally produced news segments each week with one hour on each weekday including Sat and Sun.
