History

WFFT-TV hit the waves on Dec 21, 1977 as an independent service with its early days shows like The Little Rascals, Superman, Battlestar, The Wild Wild West, McHale’s Navy, Galactica, Battlestar, Night Gallery and Star Trek introduced over the years. For a small period of time, it also broadcasted ABC content preempted by WPTA on ch 21 which usually included shows that made the night lineup of ABC. At one time WFFT was #1 ranked independent station operating in US.

WFFT became a charter Fox affiliate on Oct 6, 1986 and was branded as “Super 55 Fox” in early mid-1990s. On Jan 1, 2008, It was rebranded from Fox 55 to Fox Fort Wayne.  It reverted to its independent status on Aug 1, 2011. The station filled its prime time schedule with mix of entertainment programs, sitcoms, crime shows like Saturday Crimetime, movies and series. In a settlement with Granite, on Feb 6, 2013, the company announced that the Fox affiliation would return to WFFT making WFFT the only former Fox affiliate that owned or operated by Nexstar and affected by the 2011 dispute with the network. After rejoining the Fox, the first program to air on the channel was Kitchen Nightmares.

On June 13, 2016, Nexstar stated that it would sell WFFT and its four other assets to Heartland Media for USD 115mn. It was once again rechristened as Fox 55 in March 2018. As of Oct 2019, WFFT is held by Allen Media Broadcasting. The channel first initiated its digital signal in 2003 and on June 12, 2009 ended all its analog operations to embrace digital derive. It started carrying Bounce TV on its newly created digital sub-channel 55.2 on Jan 1, 2014. Antenna TV was added to ch 55.3 on March 19, 2018.

Programming

The Fox affiliate currently broadcasts local newscasts each week with 1 hour on Weekdays, Sat and Sun. Moreover, the sports show The Locker Room is also available on Sunday evenings after 10pm news-bulletin.
