WTHI went on air on July 22, 1954 as Terre Haute’s maiden channel under the ownership of local businessman and Indianapolis Motor Speedway owner Tony Hulman the latter also had ownership over WTRHI 1480 AM and WTHI 99.9 FM. It has been a CBS affiliate since its inception despite initially carrying programs from DuMont Television Network, NBC and ABC as well as through secondary affiliations. It was originally headquartered at 918 Ohio Street in downtown Terre Haute which was also housed by WTHI-FM.

It made split with DuMont in Aug 1956 while NBC content was taken over by WTWO in Sep 1965. WTHI then became an exclusive CBS station when ABC got linked with WIIL-TV in April 1973. My Mother the Car, Captain Jack Hanes and Coach were the notable programs aired during that time. It signed a secondary affiliation with United Paramount Network when it was launched on Jan 16, 1995. Upon the merger of UPN with The WB, Channel 10 became a CW affiliate. The Hulman family had ownership over WTHI until 1998 when they released their flagship asset to Emmis Communications. On May 15, 2005, Emmis revealed about the sale of its 16 television channels to focus on its radio division. Emmis released WTHI to LIN TV Corporations in Aug 2005.

It moved its operations to a new building that lied one block west of its original studios and offices at 800 Ohio Street in downtown Terre Haute. WTHI was demolished in Dec 2012 and move completely disconnected WTHI form WTHI-FM as the latter was relocated to the new office building in August.

Media General on March 21, 2014 gave its plans to acquire LIN Media for USD 1.6bn following a merger deal; the deal consummated on Dec 19, 2014.
