Early History

The station was launched on July 8, 1953 by Las Vegas Television Inc. owned by Hank Greenspun who was also the owner of Las Vegas Sun. KLAS was the first station to launch in Nevada as it beat Reno-based KOLO by two months and five days. A CBS affiliate from its beginning has always had a secondary affiliation with ABC which it shared with KORK and then KSHO-TV (now KTNV-TV). The Channel 8 was sold to Summa Corporation owned by aviation Tycoon Howard Hughes in 1968. Following the death of Hughes in 1976, the station remained in the control of an outside trust until 1978. It was then sold out to Landmark Communications which was renamed as Landmark Media Enterprises in Sep 2008.

1996 and onwards

It became the maiden commercial TV in Nevada and one of first in US to carry a digital transmission on April 16, 1996. The signal first hit the airs during the National Association of Broadcasters annual convention. HD broadcasts were introduced in April 2000 in the Las Vegas.

Landmark on Jan 30, 2008 put KLAS and Nashville based asset WTVF on sale but couldn’t find a suitable buyer for their properties. The channels remained under the control of Landmark until Sep 4, 2012 when Journal Broadcast Group agreed to make purchase of WTVF for USD 215m; the sale concluded on Dec 6, 2012. The left alone KLAS-TV was purchased by Nexstar Broadcasting Group on Nov 21, 2014 for a fee of $145m. The deal concluded on Feb 13, 2015.

Due to retransmission dispute of Nexstar with Cox Cable, the channel was dropped by the cable service on Jan 29, 2016 just before Super Bowl’s 50th edition but was soon restored after Nexstar renewed its deal with the company. Nexstar on Dec 3, 2018 revealed its plans to acquire Chicago based Tribune Media for USD 6.4b, the deal once sealed in the 3rd quarter of 2019 as expected would give KLAS a number of sisters in Los Angeles, Salt Lake City and San Diego areas and would also make Nexstar as the largest TV station operation by total number of channels.
